2. 선교사 소개: 베너블(Venable, William Anderson(1886.10.26.-1947.1.2.)
Venable, William Anderson(1886.10.26.-1947.1.2.)은 1908년 남장로교 선교사로 부인과 함께 내한하여, 1909년에 건립한 목포의 존 왓킨스 아카데미(John Watkins Academy)에서 학교 행정을 맡게 되었는데, 그는 오직 교육선교만을 위해 처음부터 임명된 선교사이다. 1910년 당시 선교부의 중심학원으로 성장하고 있는 군산의 남학교 책임을 맡기 위해 군산으로 전보되어 선교활동을 하였다. 조지 톰슨 브라운 지음, 천사무엘, 김균태, 오승재 옯김, 『한국 선교 이야기』-미국 남장로교 한국 선교 역사(1892-1962)(서울: 도서출판 동연, 2010), 102.

KUNSAN BOYS' ACADEMY

We are very happy here at Kunsan, over the completion of our new Boys' Academy Building. After having had only three rooms in two Korean buildings at our command for class-rooms and dormitory for years past, this new buildings with its six class-room, its 20-45 ft. chapel, office, and basement, seems like a palace. This main building, our new dormitory, and small Korean building which we expect to use as a physical and chemical laboratory, together with a play-ground in front large enough for base-ball, and ground reserved for teachers' house on one side, have all been enclosed with a good fence, and look quite like a school campus.
We started moving into our new quarters last November, and have gradually taken possession of the whole building as the carpenters, painters, and plasters retired, holding classes in one part of the building while painting and plastering were on in another part, and then exchanging rooms, a performance which I would never repeat. At last after many postponements, we held our dedication service on April 3rd, formally consecrating the building to the Lord's work.
We began our new school year on April 1st, having now, we hope, successfully passed through the transition to the government school calendar, and the new course of study adopted by the Senate. We have 42 boys in attendance at present, of whom 30 are in the Academy grades, and the remaining 12 in the preparatory department. Of this number, more than three-fourths are some sort of work to help pay their expenses; 20 are doing grading with picks, shovels and dumpcarts, and others are doing janitor work, mimeographing, outside-work at the mission houses, and a few others are acting as language teachers, or teachers in the Primary school. Our numbers are small as yet, but we are trying to lay the foundations well I preparation for the future. The school is running smoothly now, and we feel very much encouraged and very thankful to Heavenly Father for all of his blessings.

군산 남자 전문학교

우리는 군산에서 새로운 남자 전문학교 건물을 완성하게 되어 매우 행복합니다. 교실들과 기숙사가 필요하여 지난 수년 간 두 개의 한국인 건물에서 오직 3개의 공간을 가지고 지냈는데, 이 새로운 건물은 6개의 교실과 폭 20, 길이 45피트의 예배당, 사무실 그리고 지하실을 가지고 있어 마치 궁전처럼 보였습니다. 이 주된 건물과 새 기숙사 그리고 물리와 화학 실험실로 사용이 기대되는 한국인 건물, 이와 함께 축구와 야구를 할 만큼 넉넉한 운동장, 한쪽에 교사 사택을 위해 마련된 땅, 이 모두는 훌륭한 담장으로 둘려 있어 완전한 학교 캠퍼스처럼 보였습니다.
우리는 지난 11월 우리의 새 구역으로 이사를 시작했는데, 목수들, 페인트공, 그리고 미장공들이 철수함에 따라 이 전체 빌딩을 차차 점유하게 되었습니다. 한쪽에서는 페인트와 미장일들이 이루어지는 동안 한 쪽에서는 수업들을 진행하면서, 그리고 교실들을 바꿔가면서 하였는데, 결코 되풀이되지 않을 것 같은 실행들이었습니다. 우리는 여러 번 연기 후에 드디어 4월 1일 공식적으로 건물을 주의 일에 봉헌하는 헌당식을 갖게 되었습니다.
우리는 추이를 거쳐 정부의 학교 일정표와 의회에 의하여 승인된 새 교육과정을 성공적으로 통과했고, 희망했던 대로 새 학년을 4월 1일에 시작하게 되었습니다. 우리는 현재 출석인원 42명을 가지고 있습니다. 그중 30명은 전문학교 수준이고 나머지 12명은 준비반에 있습니다. 이중 4분의 3 이상이 그들의 경비 마련을 위해 어떤 일들을 하고 있습니다. 20명은 곡괭이, 삽과 손수레를 가지고 땅 고르는 일을 하고 있고, 나머지는 잡일을 하고 있는 데, 인쇄물 등사, 복지시설의 바깥일을 하고 있고, 소수의 사람은 언어 교사 또는 초등학교에서 교사로 일하고 있습니다. 아직 우리의 숫자는 적지만 그러나 우리는 미래를 위한 준비로, 기초를 잘 다지기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 현재 학교는 원활하게 운영되고 있습니다. 우리는 아주 많은 용기를 얻었고, 또 그분의 모든 은혜에 대하여 우리의 하늘 아버지께 매우 감사드리고 있습니다.
